An August Affair – the Festival that Never Ends
Calgary’s diverse culture has seen increased attention in the last decade. Calgary is teeming with festivals and events this summer that demonstrate what a unique city we are. Two festivals being held this summer that you should be SURE to check out are Afrikadey and the Reggae Festival.
Afrikadey is running August 7th to 11th and the Reggae Festival quickly follows August 11th to 18th. That means 9 days full of music, food and culture.
Afrikadey features several events at different locations around downtown Calgary. The film “We are Together” is debuting in Western Canada on Wednesday at the Plaza Theater in Kensington. Amazone Women Drummers are performing at Olympic Plaza. The performance is free to everyone and is held on the Thursday. Later in the evening a drum workshop is being held. Another free event is happening on August 10th with the Agape Band and Friday is a dance workshop. The even concludes with numerous artists performing including Dele Sosimi and Femi Abosede. This is an event that you just can’t pass up!
The Reggae Festival is kicking off on the Saturday at Shaw Millennium Park (located at 9th Ave and 12th Street.) The event’s schedule has not been posted but it is sure to be mind blowing. Last year hosted almost 20 artists and this years line up is gearing to be nothing less then spectacular.
If you can’t make it to all the amazing events happening in Calgary this summer, make sure that these festivals make it on your calendar.
